With the 63rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos have selected Marvin Mims Jr! Here's the official TDN scouting report on the wide receiver from Oklahoma. NFLDraft | ratedrookie | BroncosCountry
Marvin Mims took his talents to Oklahoma after a record-breaking high school career in Texas that saw him set the record for career receiving yards and single-season receiving yards . As a senior, he hauled in 117 receptions and 32 receiving touchdowns to go with 2,629 yards. After two strong seasons in 2020 and 2021, Mims truly broke out in 2022 as the go-to guy for the Sooners.
Mims is an explosive playmaker. His ability to win down the field and produce after the catch leads to frequent big plays. Averaging more than 20 yards per reception in 2021 and 2022, Mims does well to create vertical separation, track the football, and adjust and attack the football in the air. While he isn’t immune to a double-catch or using his frame on occasion to secure a catch, Mims is a consistent finisher that hasn’t struggled with drops.
Despite being a smaller receiver, Mims competes well above his weight class and his competitive toughness shines as a blocker. He does well to process on the fly as a route-runner and attack space to make himself available to the quarterback. He adjusts well to zones and processes coverage well. He has the twitch, fluidity, and elusiveness to thrive as a route-runner and create separation with consistency. Mims has experience returning punts for the Sooners.
When it comes to concerns, Mims is a smaller receiver that doesn’t offer much in the way of length or wingspan. His ability to play through contact as a route-runner will be a concern. Despite primarily being an outside receiver during his most productive year in 2022, he likely profiles best to a slot role in the NFL where he can take advantage of free releases.
Mims has the makings of a dynamic WR2/3 at the next level that provides field-stretching ability to his offense in addition to having a dangerous yards-after-catch skill. Perhaps he won’t be an extremely high-volume target but his skill set improves the offensive spacing with his athleticism and ability to win at every level of the field.
