Wolverine in his yellow and black costume in Marvel's Wolverine.

Marvel's Wolverine has finally gotten a brand-new trailer and a release date after years of waiting. We've been given the best look at the game yet, and that is, for the majority of fans, enough. While the unfortunate leaks from a while ago gave us an unfinished glimpse into the game's overall loop and design, this trailer really is the flashy, cinematic, and explosive reveal we've all been craving since it was originally announced back in 2021.

However, as much as the gameplay and story details showcased in Marvel Wolverine's exciting new trailer were great to see, major issues are already presenting themselves. That's not to say that people shouldn't be excited, nor that Marvel's Wolverine won't be one of the best games of 2026. Rather, Marvel's Wolverine is clearly taking some massive and frankly necessary risks that could end up being mistakes. Marvel's Wolverine's Gore Could Be A Problem It Makes It Less Approachable To A Younger Audience Marvel's Wolverine's first gameplay trailer revealed the game differs from its predecessor, Marvel's Spider-Man, in one significant way: it is extremely gory. The obscene amount of viscera displayed in Marvel's Wolverine is almost sickening, something that, as a fan of games like Gears of War, comes as a surprise to me. From ripping and tearing through enemies as blood bursts from every orifice to Logan engaging in casual carnage, Marvel's Wolverine looks more akin to Prototype than Spider-Man. This level of gore is perhaps expected, but could prove to be a significant problem for Marvel's Wolverine. Not only will it result in the game getting a much higher age rating than its predecessors, but it will also put off any younger players who were perhaps excited to play another Marvel video game. That's not to say that Insomniac's Spider-Man games are lacking gore, but their combat looks like child's play compared to Wolverine's blood-curdling savagery. Of course, Marvel products don't have to cater to younger audiences, but it is an all-inclusive brand that does, often, skew toward that demographic. Marvel's Wolverine isolating a potentially huge chunk of the core Marvel audience could ultimately lead to a reduction in sales, something that Insomniac can't afford, considering the game's enormously expensive budget. However, it is also something it couldn't avoid, as Marvel's Wolverine had to be as gory as it looks. Marvel's Wolverine Has To Be Extremely Gory Wolverine Is An Inherently Violent Character Wolverine is an inherently hyper-violent character that appears in many comic panels as either covered in his own blood or someone else's. To reduce that just to fit a specific age rating would be a huge disservice to the character and would likely only serve to annoy fans. Were he to kill an enemy with just a splash of blood, players might understandably riot and quit the game. Returning to those early 2000s levels of violence in video games makes perfect sense for Wolverine. Of course, how much enjoyment people will get out of that will differ. It is one thing to see violence unfold on the page or even on the big screen, but when you're actually committing these violent acts, it can be a little off-putting. Marvel's Wolverine is borrowing key features from the comics, and that is important, but how well that will translate into a fun gaming experience is yet to be seen. Insomniac needed to take this risk with Marvel's Wolverine; hopefully, it'll pay off. Marvel's Wolverine Like Follow Followed Released 2026 Developer Insomniac Games Publisher Sony Franchise Marvel
