Marvel's new Punisher debuts this week, and the anti-hero is picking up where Frank Castle left off with an arsenal of hi-tech weaponry.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Punisher #1The Punisher is coming back to Marvel, but this time, an entirely new character will be donning the infamous skull logo. Former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Joe Garrison takes up the mantle in Frank Castle’s stead, set on a mission of vengeance after his family is killed in a house bombing.

Coming from the creative team of David Pepose, Dave Wachter and Dan Brown, the preview for Punisher #1 starts things off with two detectives investigating the aftermath of an apparent accidental explosion, until one of them notices a hidden bomb that didn’t go off. Close It’s a great set-up that’s being described by Marvel as “John Wick meets The Fugitive,” and having Garrison be a former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a nice way to differentiate the new Punisher from Frank Castle. As readers can clearly see in the final panel of the preview, Garrison’s got access to a whole host of hi-tech weaponry Castle never dreamed of. The Punisher has had quite a hectic couple of years, both on and off the page.

Garrison left his shady past behind when he retired from S.H.I.E.L.D. to be with his family, but as the events of the Punisher #1 preview show, that past winds up catching back up with him. Marvel and the creators are keeping with tradition by giving Garrison his own tragic back-story, but the added complication of Garrison being the lead suspect in his family’s murder is a new twist.

How Will Marvel’s New Punisher Stack Up Against Past Versions? Close Garrison isn’t the first character to be inspired by Frank Castle to take up the skull. Lynn Michaels and Rachel Cole-Alves both wore the Punisher’s symbol and helped Castle in his war on crime. Frank himself has been through several permutations, whether it was his time as the undead Frankencastle or the recent storyline that saw him gain the powers of the Beast of the Hand.
