"Gotham War" left a serious mark on Jason Todd and put his entire future as a hero in jeopardy. But the Clown Prince of Crime is giving Red Hood that should bring Jason back to his normal, daredevil self.
In a preview for The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #12 by Matthew Rosenberg and Carmine Di Giandomenico, the titular villain is down after discovering that he's not the real Joker, but a brainwashed impostor. However, he decides to make one final play and seeks out the Red Hood for his assistance.Knowing that Red Hood is still suffering from the reconditioning Batman put him through, Joker gives Red Hood a low dose of Joker Toxin to help him overcome his fear.
Joker's Toxin is Helping Red Hood Overcome His Brainwashing The recent "Gotham War" crossover saw a lot of betrayals within the Bat-Family. During the event, Jason teamed up with Catwoman to help her in her mission to save Gotham by retraining low-level henchmen to become cat burglars who targeted the elite. To stop Red Hood permanently, the Dark Knight kidnapped Jason and reconditioned his mind to feel intense fear every time his adrenaline levels get too high.
Batman's conditioning was powerful, but it wasn't 100% effective. Red Hood can still do things that elevate his heart rate, it just terrifies him. Jason's been able to push himself through his fear, but it requires a lot of focus and concentration. But Joker Toxin could be the trick that finally helps him resolve that mental block. After all, if he's scared, Jason's body isn't going to react the way he needs it to in a fight.
Taking After the Joker is Red Hood's Only Option for Normalcy Red Hood absolutely despises the Joker for all the pain and torment the villain has caused in Jason's life. But becoming more like his nemesis could be Jason's best avenue to continue operating as the Red Hood. Jason wouldn't succumb to his fear in tense situations and he could finally get back to fighting people directly.
