Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Born Again

The clock is ticking. Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle, the growling, grieving, and impossibly compelling vigilante also known as the Punisher, is coming back to the MCU with a post-Daredevil: Born Again special titled, appropriately, The Punisher: One Last Kill.

But, if you haven't revisited his Netflix solo run, you'll probably enjoy his Phase Six appearance just fine — you'll just be watching it with the subtitles off…metaphorically speaking. We're talking two seasons and twenty-six episodes that build out who Castle actually is beneath the skull and the shotgun. And it was all courtesy of Steve Lightfoot, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s take on the character, which covered everything from the CIA black-ops conspiracy that got his family killed to the complicated resurrection of his best-friend-turned-worst-enemy, Billy Russo . Everyone from Ebon Moss-Bachrach to Deborah Ann Woll pop up in The Punisher's run to give Frank’s story stakes, but Bernthal’s the draw. He’s also the reason a re-watch before the complicated antihero returns to Hell’s Kitchen is worth dedicating a weekend to. How ‘The Punisher’ Turned Frank Castle Into Marvel’s Most Compelling Antihero When Frank Castle first stomped through Daredevil Season 2 in 2016, he arrived as a supporting character and promptly chewed every scene he was in to bits. Bernthal’s Castle is broken, with a barely-contained intensity that immediately sets everyone on edge. It also sparks a kind of desperation to understand just how he got this way. War, and the terrible things he witnessed in the line of duty play a role, but Frank’s descent into indiscriminate vigilantism really started when his family was massacred in a park shootout that was either terrible luck or something much, much worse. By the time Daredevil Season 2 ended, the audience wanted more Frank. Marvel, to its credit, gave it to us. The Punisher's first season picked up those threads almost immediately, dragging Frank off the streets and into a bigger government conspiracy. A sprawling cover-up involving a CIA black ops mission, a rogue NSA analyst named Micro , and the military brotherhood that orchestrated his family's deaths all converged to create the kind of action-packed prestige military drama that’s commonplace now, but only because Bernthal and company did it first. And, arguably, best. The Punisher has always been a show that’s interested in what it costs to survive a war, both the one fought overseas and the quieter one waiting at home. Are You? You understand that responsibility isn't a burden you choose; it's one that finds you. Whether it's a neighbourhood mugging or a multiverse crisis, you show up. Peter Parker's lesson — that great power demands great responsibility — isn't a slogan to you. It's the code you live by, even when it costs you everything. Your Hero 😈 Daredevil You fight in the shadows between law and chaos, guided by a fierce moral compass that refuses to let the guilty walk free. Deeply principled and intensely focused, you use every tool available — your mind, your body, your faith — to protect those the system overlooks. You've looked into the darkness and chosen not to become it, though the line has never been easy. Matt Murdock's duality — champion in the courtroom, devil in the alley — mirrors your own: relentless, conflicted, and unwilling to stop. Your Hero 🤖 Iron Man Brilliant, driven, and occasionally insufferable — but always the person who solves the unsolvable problem. You lead with your mind and back it up with resources, innovation, and a stubbornness that borders on heroic. You started out looking out for yourself, but somewhere along the way the world became your responsibility. Tony Stark's arc — from ego to sacrifice — is your arc too. Your Hero 💀 The Punisher You've been through fire that would break most people — and it did change you, completely. You bring the storm when it's needed — and the warmth when it matters just as much. Your Hero 🛡️ Captain America You believe in something bigger than yourself — and you fight for it even when the world has moved on and nobody else will. You don't bully the small guy, and you never stop when it gets hard. Steve Rogers didn't become a hero when he got the serum — he was always one. So were you. In a world full of people taking the easy road, you're the one who picks up the shield and stands up — every single time. ↩ Retake Quiz But what the series never got enough credit for, especially in its first season, was how genuinely fun its central storyline was. The first installment is essentially a buddy comedy for people who would never watch a buddy comedy. Frank and Micro spend the season in a hilariously mismatched partnership: one is a built-like-a-bunker killing machine processing unimaginable heartbreak, and the other is a soft, anxious techie hiding in a basement spying on his own family. They bicker about sandwiches, and Frank periodically terrifies Micro with casual displays of violence in ways the show clearly finds as darkly funny as we do. Then Season 2 does something totally unexpected, going full road trip movie and picking up Amy , a teenage grifter tangled in a blackmail scheme involving a shadowy cult. Frank and Amy drive around the American Midwest, getting into various kinds of gunfire-adjacent trouble while forming a bond that softens the gruff brute in a way fans hadn’t seen before. It's a tonal gamble — pivoting from conspiracy thriller to something closer to True Grit by way of No Country for Old Men — and it mostly pays off, with Whigham matching Bernthal's intensity with a scrappy, street-smart energy that never tips into cuteness. ‘The Punisher’ Thrived Because of Its Complex Characters and Even Better Performances But what makes both seasons work, beyond the action, are the characters…and the actors playing them. Barnes as Billy Russo, Frank's best friend, brother-in-arms, and the scumbag who put the whole catastrophe in motion, is fascinating to watch here. He’s playing a sociopath whose defining quality isn't coldness but warmth. Billy is magnetic, charming, and also the architect of an entire family's death. Season 1 ends with Billy and Frank in one of the most viscerally brutal fights in Marvel's Netflix history, a choice that makes total sense precisely because the show spent 12 episodes making you understand why it had to happen. While Barnes stirs chaos, Woll's Karen Page works the opposite register, serving as Frank's moral tether across both seasons. She’s one of the few people who looks at him like he's a man drowning in grief rather than just a walking kill count. Her scenes with Bernthal remain some of the best in the MCU-adjacent space, built around a dynamic that’s so easy to root for. One we hope to see more of when the Punisher makes his way to Disney+. . Why ‘One Last Kill’ Is a Crucial Next Chapter for Frank Castle But, since we’re back to the topic of Born Again, One Last Kill, and this latest character renaissance, it’s worth noting that the broader MCU has been in various states of creative recalibration lately, and Frank Castle's return carries a particular charge. That’s because Bernthal didn't just play the character well; he redefined what the man could be, excavating something tragic and movingly human from what is, at the most base level, a dude with unresolved trauma who shoots people. Both seasons of The Punisher are on Netflix right now, and while they're not perfect television — the pacing occasionally sprawls, Season 2's villains are somewhat undercooked, and there are only so many warehouse fight sequences a person can reasonably process — they are consistently, often surprisingly good. They took risks, rewrote Frank Castle's legacy for the better, and laid the groundwork for a return that has every reason to mean something.
