Captain America leads the MCU Avengers in Marvel Studios The First 10 Years image
Marvel has quietly set up a major retcon for a superhero team the MCU did wrong. The MCU has brought many of the publisher’s biggest icons to the big screen in big-budget spectacles that fans could only have dreamt of a few decades prior.
Audiences have flocked to the MCU, and many characters have been elevated to household names. At the same time, the MCU has shined a light on the less-traveled areas of the Marvel Universe. Movies such as Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy proved there was just as much an audience for the second-stringers as there was for Iron Man, Captain America and the rest of the Avengers. As a result, some of Marvel’s “off the beaten path” characters made their way to movie and television screens. Some, like Shang-Chi, met with success. Others, such as the Eternals, failed to connect with fans, and were quickly forgotten. The MCU also tried to incorporate the Runaways as well, but it too failed, doing a grave disservice to the property. The MCU also tried to incorporate the Runaways as well, but it too failed, doing a grave disservice to the property. The Runaways Will Not Be Running Away in a New What If? Special Regular Runaways Writer Rainbow Rowell Takes the Team In a New Direction And now, Marvel is setting the Runaways up for a major retcon, one that will upend everything fans thought they knew. As announced at ComicsPRO, Marvel will release a series of new What If? one-shots, showing the “roads not taken.” One of the specials shows fans what would happen if the Runaways never turned on their parents, and never ran away. The special, which will be written by regular Runaways scribe Rainbow Rowell and drawn by Zulema Lavina, will be out later this year. Marvel has not released any additional information on the one-shots, or any of the other books in the new What If initiative. The team last appeared, canonically, in the One World Under Doom event. The Runaways Biggest Retcon Ever Opens Up Cool Story Possibilities Would the Runaways Have Taken Over For Their Parents in the Pride? While the concept behind the forthcoming Runaways What If special runs counter to the property’s basic premise, it does open some interesting story possibilities. The Runaways’ parents were super-villains, working together as a team called “the Pride.” The Pride sacrificed children to appease their demonic overlords. That is, until their own kids found out. Armed with the knowledge that their parents were not who they thought they were, the kids went on the run. The kids then realized no one was going to do anything about it, and they took matters into their own hands. Some had superpowers, whereas others had to rely on their parents’ technology, but they were committed to destroying the Pride. The child sacrifices would have continued, and the Pride’s stranglehold over the West Coast would have continued. It is also likely the kids would have succeeded their parents, and took control of the Pride. Runaways Was The Best Marvel Debut of the 2000s The MCU Failed the Runaways In a Major Fashion Runaways’ combination of teen angst and super-heroics made it a fan favorite, one that continues to resonate with readers over 20 years after it debuted. One of the best Marvel titles of the 2000s, Runaways was seemingly tailor-made for a live-action adaptation. Indeed, talk of a Runaways movie or television show began before the MCU came into being. Finally, in 2017, The Runaways premiered on Hulu, running for three seasons. Initially billed as being a part of the MCU, The Runaways nevertheless seemed divorced from it. There were no mentions, or appearances, by other MCU heavy-hitters, nor were the events of the movies referenced on the show either. The Runaways were a victim of the schism existing at the time between Marvel’s film and television departments, and this did a grave disservice to the concept. The Runaways are firmly grounded in the Marvel Universe, but the show was not allowed to lean too far into it. It may have made the show more accessible to audiences, but neglected its roots. The Runaways Most Likely Will Not Be Returning to the MCU Rainbow Rowell and Zulema Lavina Are Showing the MCU How Badly They Handled The Runaways The possibility that the Runaways will return to the MCU is slim. Marvel’s TV and movie divisions are now under one roof, but there has been no sign Alex, Nico, Molly and the rest will take their place alongside Ant-Man, Shang-Chi and Black Widow onscreen. The Runaways’ journey may have come to an end in the MCU for good. They will show what makes the Runaways so great, showing the MCU what they fumbled in the worst way possible.
