Star Trek's love of Twain has NOT been exaggerated.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 4, "Something Borrowed, Something Green."

Star Trek: Lower Decks' hilarious Mark Twain subplot is the latest in a long line of references to the pen name of author Samuel L. Clemens. The franchise has always had a fascination with writers from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Philip Marlowe. There have also been regular references to Shakespeare in Star Trek from its Klingon translation in The Undiscovered Country to Star Trek: Picard's speech from Julius Caesar.

Also in Star Trek: Voyager, Captain Kathryn Janeway was a great lover of the work of Samuel Clemens, and once gifted her holographic lover Michael Sullivan a copy of Mark Twain's Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Her ancestor Henry Janeway owned Alexandria Books in turn-of-the-century Portage Creek, which had a picture of Samuel Clemens on the wall.
