He is the Director of Psychotherapy Training at the UCF psychiatry residency program. Ruffalo has trained at the University of Pittsburgh, the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, and the Gunderson Personality Disorders Institute at McLean Hospital.
