A federal Labor MP has flagged that the Commonwealth could take control of an Aboriginal art gallery project in Alice Springs and described the Northern Territory government's plan to downsize the building 'offensive'.
The NT government's plan to downsize the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery has again come under fire.Federal Labor MP Marion Scrymgour has flagged that the Commonwealth could take over the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery plan for Alice Springs.
"The whole point of why the federal government bought into this with the $80 million was that it was going to be an institution that we could all feel proud of," she said. "If the Northern Territory Government and the Alice Springs Town Council and others can't resolve this, is it time for the federal government to say, 'We'll take control here and we will put this in place'?" she said.Tourism Central Australia chief executive Danial Rochford said the gallery was a "critical" part of strengthening the town's struggling economy.
The South of the Gap group argues the development threatens sacred women's sites and that the gallery should be built south of Heavitree Gap in the Desert Knowledge precinct.
