Alice Springs residents are beginning to doubt a controversial plan to construct an Aboriginal art gallery will go ahead after the Northern Territory government revealed its intention to almost halve the building's size.
The NT government has revealed its plan for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery, but some locals doubt it will ever be built.
Ms Finocchiaro said the gallery would still be "world class" and added that the $149-million budget would not have been sufficient to build the previous Labor government's proposed "giant brown monstrosity". Anzac Oval will be reinstated as a rugby field and restoration works are set to be completed by February 2025.Labor Member for Gwoja and Arrernte man Chansey Paech, who was a key driver of the project, claimed the new gallery design would be too small to attract many visiting exhibitions.
"It was one of the first things I talked to the Prime Minister about … week two of government," she said.Local historian Alex Nelson, who has long been critical of the project, said the new government had inherited a "colossal mess" from the previous administration. He urged the government to scrap the gallery altogether and redirect funds towards existing attractions and infrastructure "desperately" in need of improvement.
