Bob Santos says Fabian Maidana was reason for boring fight Saturday night in Las Vegas undercard
Mario Barrios didn’t know it at first, but he was in the clear. Home free. Guaranteed to win. All he had to do was follow the lead of his opponent, Fabian Maidana . Or so it seemed, at least to one observer. Maidana had just gotten up from a right hand to the chin in the third round that put him on the canvas for the first time in his professional career.
“The guy is a former Olympian with 25 pro bouts,” Santos said. “This was an opportunity of a lifetime for him. It’s hard to imagine a fighter with that much experience would go into survival mode. I think once Mario hit him with that big right hand, his whole mindset changed.” Maidana wasn’t busy, but he wasn’t altogether ineffective. He threw just 323 punches, landing 84 over the 12 rounds . When he was able to throw and connect, it usually was to the right eye of Barrios.
