San Antonio welterweight Mario Barrios defends his interim WBC title May 4 in Las Vegas
The first time he fought on a Canelo Alvarez card, Mario Barrios scored the biggest win of his professional career. In September, he knocked down Yordenis Ugas , a former world champion from Cuba , twice en route to a lopsided victory by unanimous decision. Now, the San Antonio welterweight has landed a bout on another Alvarez undercard.
Maidana had his own fight planned with Ugas two years ago until an eye injury forced him to pull out. He lost to Francisco Mercado – 5-1 at the time – upon his return but has since reeled off four straight wins against so-so competition, all in Argentina. Maidana says he’s determined to carve out his own name in the sport, despite his brother’s achievements. In addition to beating Broner, Marcos Maidana gave Floyd Mayweather Jr. a battle in the first of their two meetings.
