Growing up in Rome, “I really approached fashion with an idea of freedom,” says Maria Grazia Chiuri. Today she brings the same value to her work as artistic director of Dior.
When the fashion designer Maria Grazia Chiuri was named artistic director of Dior in 2016, it caused a stir. Some critics wondered how the French couture brand would fare in the hands of an Italian who had worked at Italian houses like Fendi and Valentino. Others worried whether Ms. Chiuri, 58, had the chops to create six collections a year on her own, after collaborating with a partner for most of her career.
What really irked Ms. Chiuri, however, was that “everyone” seemed to think it was a big deal that she would be the first woman to lead Dior in its 70-year history. “I really found that crazy,” she says over video from her home in Rome, between preparations for a Dior show in Paris on July 4. “People were so surprised! They didn’t seem to notice that I had been working in fashion since I was 20.”
