Map Shows States Were Most, Least Houses Are Being Built

Government data showed that the South and the Midwest had new housing start increases.

New homes construction rose by nearly 6 percent on a monthly basis across the United States in April, but the picture was mixed across different regions with the northeast seeing a plunge in housing starts while other areas saw a spike.The northeast saw housing starts—homes that are starting to be built—plunge by nearly 23 percent from March. This was quite a dip compared to the Midwest, which saw those constructions jump 19 percent, and the South which reported a 10 percent increase.

ViewsDespite the overall uptick in home starts in April, experts believe that the trend needs to continue to meet the pent up demand from buyers.'The total annualized rate of 1.36 million is insufficient overall,' Lawrence Yun, the National Association of Realtos chief economist, said in a note shared with Newsweek, referring to the number of housing starts for April. 'The country needs around 1.6 million or higher for a few years to truly bring about a balance in the housing sector.
