Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles , who is expected to release the results of the mid-year NWEA MAP assessments on Wednesday, wouldn't divulge any of the student score results but seemed pretty happy about them during a tour of two HISD schools Tuesday.

Without going into details, because we agreed not to, Miles walks into a classroom, observes and then swings back out into the hallway to ask questions of the principal and then deliver his impression of what he saw and what he says needs to be done. All this is done in hushed tones so that his remarks don't carry into the open door classroom or to any passersby.

Two things that frequent critics at school board meetings might find surprising: students in the Team rooms said they liked them."It's quiet" was the almost universal explanation. And a chance encounter with a teacher moving her line of students into class had her stopping Miles to tell him how much it meant to her that someone at the superintendent level had enough interest in the schools to actually visit and observe what was going on there.
