A weapons detection system prevented a student from bringing a firearm onto the Mansfield Legacy High School campus in Mansfield on Friday morning.Administrators found the handgun in a student’s backpack after receiving an alert from the Evolv system, which was installed on campuses in 2023. Mansfield ISD said the student was arrested and will be disciplined according to the district’s code of conduct. The school district hasn’t released any information about the student who was arrested.
It’s not clear how old that student is or why he or she brought the weapon to school.Mansfield ISD said no specific threat was made against any other student or staff member.Mansfield ISD installed the Evolv system at all of its high schools in response to a 2021 shooting at Timberview High School.It uses a weapons detection sensor combined with artificial intelligence that monitors both the front door and alternative entrances.It’s the same technology used in some entertainment venues.
