The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is implementing weapons detection systems in all its high schools to enhance security and student safety.
The Houston Independent School District (HISD) announced that all high schools will be equipped with weapons detection systems. In a letter to high school parents, HISD Superintendent Mike Miles stated that these systems are essential for maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. The Open Gate weapons detection systems will screen all students, staff, and visitors entering high school campuses upon full implementation.
HISD officials plan to implement the systems gradually, starting in January and February 2024, with one new campus equipped each week. Priority will be given to campuses with a history of firearm incidents. By March 2024, the rollout will accelerate, adding multiple campuses each week until all high schools have operational systems by May 2025. The implementation will bring changes to the daily routine, including designated entry points for students each morning, mandatory screening through towers, and removal of laptops from bags or backpacks. Secondary screening will be conducted if the system detects a potentially prohibited item. Families at affected campuses will be notified one to two weeks before the systems are implemented
