According to authorities, the couple would ask for test drives of vehicles in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, clone or steal the key fob, then return to steal the vehicle.

One person has been arrested and another is still being sought for stealing 20 vehicles worth $2.4 million, authorities say. According to the Old Saybrook Police Department, a year-long investigation discovered that the couple stole vehicles in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey.

According to a report by CT Insider, a man and a woman were working together to convince dealerships to offer test drives and would then swap or clone the key fob. The couple would then return later to steal the vehicle. Police begun their investigation on February 5, 2025. At that time, two GMC Sierra 2500 HD Denali Ultimate pickup trucks with a combined value of $177,210 had been reported stolen from the lot at Vachon Buick GMC. The suspects allegedly posed as customers two days earlier, and because the original key fobs were still at the dealership, police say their suspicion is that the fobs were cloned during the test drive. The male suspect was described as wearing a UPS uniform while the female wore a red winter hat, gray jacket and white leggings. On March 14, 2024, a couple matching that description visited Monaco Ford. They wanted to drive a 2024 Ford F-450 pickup truck valued at $86,515. According to police, the woman was “playful” with the salesperson while the male suspect started the truck; the next day, the truck was stolen. Authorities say they believe the woman distracted the salesperson so her partner could swap out the key fob. The investigation discovered that between March of 2024 and May of 2025, seven vehicles with a combined value exceeding $662,000 were stolen in Connecticut by a couple using the same routine. As part of this investigation, however, Old Saybrook Police Department has been contacted by eight police departments in New Jersey and three police departments in New York reporting nearly identical thefts. Across the three states, authorities say they believe the couple stole or attempted to steal 20 vehicles worth $2.4 million.Tiffine Kyte, 37, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania has been arrested as a suspect in this case. Police discovered that Kyte's cellphone was in proximity to the vehicles in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut during the dates and times when vehicles were stolen. Charges against her include four counts of larceny 1st of a motor vehicle degree and six counts of conspiracy to commit larceny 1st of a motor vehicle degree. Kyte was arrested in Warren County, New Jersey and extradited to Connecticut on January 15, 2026. Her bond was set at $275,000. The male suspect who introduced himself as “Dexter' at the dealerships remains at large.
