Man Utd produced an astonishing late comeback to beat Brentford 2-1 in the Premier League and give Erik ten Hag a win he so badly needed.

Had this summer gone a little differently, Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire could have been teaming up for West Ham United rather than Manchester United. As Erik ten Hag danced across his technical area with 97 minutes on the clock at Old Trafford, he would have been hoping his luck might have been turning after all.

A couple of minutes earlier United were starring down the barrel of humiliation. They had trailed Brentford since the 26th minute and rarely looked like getting back in the game. For most of the second half, they were a broken team. Then on came McTominay to stitch them back together. Until the Scot's astonishing rescue act, United had been bordering on the hopeless again. They trailed at the break for a fourth successive Premier League game and were on course to lose three games in a row at Old Trafford in all competitions for the first time since 1962.

Gradually, their performance became more and more ragged. Fernandes lost the ball regularly, Mason Mount was ineffectual again, corners couldn't beat the first man, free-kicks beat everybody and drifted out of play.
