Kenneth Chaney admitted to killing Trey Walker in a dispute over a stolen backpack outside the San Diego Central Library. Surveillance footage and witness testimonies played a key role in the case.
A 23-year-old man, Kenneth Chaney, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a semi-automatic firearm for fatally shooting Trey Walker, 20, in the courtyard outside the San Diego Central Library on May 23, 2023. Prosecutors allege the shooting stemmed from a dispute over a stolen backpack. A second person was also injured in the incident.
During a preliminary hearing last year, the man whose backpack was stolen testified that it was taken while he was ordering food at a taco shop two blocks from the library. He said he chased after the suspected thief, eventually cornering him outside a parking garage. Surveillance footage presented in court showed a man wearing a pink ski mask, whom prosecutors identify as Chaney, draw a gun and point it at the backpack owner. The two men engaged in a brief conversation, revealing that the gunman's associate had taken the bag. They agreed to go to the library to see if the alleged thief was present and retrieve the backpack. At the library, they encountered a group that included Walker, Walker's girlfriend, and several other men. Some individuals in the group questioned the man wearing the ski mask about the backpack. The backpack owner stated that Walker approached the masked man, who backed away, pulled out a gun, and opened fire. The gunman then fired at the remaining members of the group, striking one of them. A camera outside the nearby ICON building captured footage of the shooter running west down K Street. The gunman is seen removing his ski mask and discarding it on the ground. As he fled, a cellphone fell from his pocket. San Diego Police Detective Conner Brown testified that after examining the phone, investigators determined it belonged to Chaney. Brown added that Chaney was also captured on other cameras in the downtown area removing and discarding articles of clothing he was wearing during the shooting. Chaney was apprehended two days after the shooting in the area of University Avenue and state Route 15 in City Heights, according to San Diego police. Chaney is scheduled to be sentenced to 21 years in state prison
