David McBeth has been jailed for 10 weeks after stealing lights from a vehicle outside a station in Sunderland in December 2018.

A man who stole the blue lights from the top of a patrol car in what police say was"an act of sheer stupidity" has been jailed for 10 weeks.

British Transport Police says David McBeth, 30, jumped on the roof of one of its vehicles when it was parked outside Sunderland station in December 2018. He was caught on CCTV with the lights over his shoulder and was seen walking away with them after pulling and kicking at them, and eventually ripping them off.David McBeth, 30, stole the blue lights from a police car outside Sunderland station in December 2018

McBeth, of Sunderland, was charged with theft and pleaded guilty when he appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on 19 March.PC Michael Proudfoot said:"He targeted a squad car in clear view of cameras and would not stop until he got hold of the emergency lights.
