An alligator attack in Florida led to a man getting part of his arm amputated.

An alligator attack in Florida led to a man getting part of his arm amputated. LAKE MONROE , Fla. - A Florida man is recovering after he was violently attacked by an alligator on Sunday. Wildlife officials said the attack led to the man getting part of his arm amputated, but they emphasized that encounters like that are rare.

Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said they were called just before 2 a.m. Sunday about an alligator attack in Lake Monroe.Lauren Claerbout, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said the attacks are uncommon. “Alligators are naturally very weary of people,” Claerbout said. “They’re not really looking to harm us in most cases. A lot of cases with alligator bites, a lot of the times, it’s a case of mistaken identity.” Alligators don’t usually go after people unless they mistake them for food, especially if they’ve been fed by humans in the past, according to experts. “When they’re fed, alligators lose their natural weariness of people and instead, they can learn to associate people with the availability of food,” Claerbout added. Those walking near Lake Monroe on Tuesday said they’ve seen alligators in the area, but have never had any issues. “I mean that’s just one of the things you got to look out for living in Florida. They are all over the place,” one lake visitor said. With an estimated 1.3 million alligators in Florida, Claerbout advised to only swim in designated areas in daylight hours since they are more active at night.“We hear all the time that the eyes are a sensitive area, so poking the alligator in the eyes might release the alligator’s bite,” Claerbout suggested. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission does have trappers who can come into areas and safely remove the animals.
