Charles Johnson III was on parole when he allegedly crashed his car into 51-year-old Ernesto Reyes during an illegal street race.
Johnson, 31, was charged in 2024 with murder and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. But now, Johnson has apparently ridden off into the sunset after a judge lowered his bail from $2.2 million to $200,000, court records show.
Johnson’s bail was lowered in May 2025, after his lawyer argued to Judge Terri Mockler that the “lifelong Bay Area resident” needed a chance at freedom to help his ill mother and that he would keep his court appointments. Deputy Public Defender Tim Ahearn also argued that the charges were overblown. “Although the prosecution alleges that Mr. Johnson was racing another car at high speed when the incident occurred, Mr. Johnson informed the police that he was fleeing a car driven by a masked individual who pointed a gun at him,” Ahearn wrote in a bail motion. Two charged with ‘school zone’ gun possession in wild Oakland liquor store shootoutStockton rappers charged with possessing gun used to shoot rapper DreamllifeRizzy in Oakland Johnson, a Richmond resident, continued to make court appearances for the next six months. But when a January hearing rolled around, he was nowhere to be found. After his absence, Mockler issued a $1 million bench warrant that remains active, court records show. A placeholder court date has been set for July. But unless Johnson turns up, the prosecution will remain in limbo. San Pablo police say Johnson was racing a Mustang through city streets on the evening of Aug. 24, 2024. They allegedly crashed into 51-year-old Ernesto Reyes on the 1300 block of 23rd Street, killing him, then drove off without making an effort to render aid. Johnson has a prior conviction for evading police, which involved him running over a policeman’s foot, authorities said. He was on parole at the time of the collision, court records show.Environmental group signs deal to buy Golden Gate Fields horse track with plans to create huge new East Bay waterfront park Environmental group signs deal to buy Golden Gate Fields horse track with plans to create huge new East Bay waterfront parkThis Sacramento suburb is booming.
