Shahid Hussain has been charged with four counts of felony hate crime, two felony counts of criminal defacement, and two felony counts of criminal damage to property.
Brown said, around 4:40 p.m. Sunday, a yellow swastika was discovered spray-painted on the wall of a synagogue in the 2900 block of West Devon Avenue. Around the same time, a yellow swastika also was discovered at Hanna Sacks Bais Yaakov High School in the 3000 block of West Devon Avenue.
Even Hussain’s physical appearance was concerning to prosecutors, who said he wore a mustache similar to Adolf Hitler, and a red cape with a yellow swastika on it, as his made his way through West Rogers Park over the weekend. “We have to have a criminal justice system that recognizes we must be responsive and hold people accountable; but also, for those who have come into our system, that they have the resources, because we don’t want people to reoffend. That is one of the biggest indictments on our system, is the fact that we have people coming in and out of the system, because they’re not going to be there forever,” Foxx said.
“Hate has struck our community very hard this week. Synagogues, schools, Jewish-owned businesses were victims of anti-Semitic graffiti and cowardly vandalism,” said Ald. Debra Silverstein “The police acted quickly and arrested the offender, but now more incidences are happening.” “The issue has to be addressed, because we can’t allow even emotional hate. Any form of hate is hate, which can lead to the worst things, as we have experienced; Jewish people, as well as everyone. Anybody who’s experienced hate throughout history,” he said.
