A 42-year-old man was arrested for DWI, leading a wild police chase on Interstate 10, and then assaulting a peace officer on Monday.
Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek said the department received tip at around 10:53 p.m. about a reckless driver possibly under the influence on I-10 at the 661-mile marker. The suspect was reportedly driving a grey Chevrolet Silverado heading eastbound.
Less than an hour later, at 11:53 PM, Texas DPS Trooper Chase Grillet spotted a vehicle matching the description in the Texan parking lot in Schulenburg. Upon attempting to make contact with the driver, the suspect vehicle sped off, narrowly missing the trooper and turning westbound onto I-10.The pursuit escalated quickly, with Deputies Chris Stansberry, Mark Pritchard, and Sgt. Ron Naumann joining the chase. The suspect continued to evade law enforcement, refusing to stop.
In an effort to stop the suspect, Deputy Pritchard deployed spike strips near FM 1115, which helped slow the vehicle. The driver then lost control, spinning off the road into a ditch. With the vehicle finally immobilized, Troopers were able to block it, and deputies removed the male driver, later identified as Robert Timothy Peterson from Katy, Texas, who appeared to be intoxicated and still uncooperative.
Emergency medical services were called to the scene and Peterson was transported to Smithville Hospital for medical clearance. Once released, he was taken into custody and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center. Peterson faces several charges, including Driving While Intoxicated, Evading Arrest with a Vehicle, and Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.
