Delawnte Hardy , 24, is charged with murder for the fatal shooting of Jamieson Ritter , 27, a Cleveland police officer , early Thursday, July 4, 2024. Delawnte Hardy , 24, allegedly stole a gun from his grandmother, Brenda Porter, before shooting her in the face inside her home in Garfield Heights Friday, June 28, according to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office.
Porter was found the next morning by a family member, who immediately called the police. She died from her injuries on the Fourth of July, prosecutors said. Ritter and other officers responded to a report in the early hours of the Fourth of the July claiming Hardy was seen at a residence in Cleveland. While Ritter was commanding Hardy to come out, the suspect fled out of the back door riding a bicycle and carrying two swords and the gun he stole from his grandmother, according to prosecutors.
As Hardy rode away, he fired four shots at pursuing officers, one of which struck Ritter, who later died at the hospital, prosecutors said. No other injuries were reported at the scene, where Hardy was arrested.One count of misdemeanor theft In the meantime, Ritter's wake will be held Friday at Falvo Funeral Home in Penfield from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Browncroft Community Church in Penfield.
