Andrew Cantu, 33, was arrested Wednesday and charged with theft of the elderly $2,500 - $30,000, however, police believe Cantu and his associates have netted more than $200,000 in the scheme.

Police said Cantu would contact elderly victims, claiming a family member was “arrested and needed bail money.” Those victims would often fall for the scheme and send large amounts of money to Cantu, according to SAPD.show Cantu has an extensive criminal history that dates back to 2006 with arrests for assaulting a public servant, evading arrest, drug possession, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a firearm and more.

His current theft charge is a third-degree felony, which carries a possible punishment of 2-10 years in prison.
