The focus of the trial will be on how donations to nonprofits from WellMed Medical Management Inc. founder Dr. George Rapier III were spent by Hector Barreto.
Barreto, who headed the SBA for five years during President George W. Bush’s administration, isDuring opening statements Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Blackwell told jurors that Barreto and a co-defendant used the money for vacations, expensive meals and their personal business.
Rapier wanted Barreto to perform political advocacy by opposing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, Medrano said. Rapier viewed Obamacare as a threat to WellMed’s business, which operates clinics that provide health care to senior citizens on Medicare, but he wanted his opposition cloaked in secrecy, Medrano said.
According to the second superseding indictment filed in May, prosecutors allege Barreto received roughly a combined $380,000 that had been donated to theand the Hispanic Business Roundtable Institute from 2014 to 2019. The foundation supports issues that improve the business environment for Latinos, while the institute supports the promotion and advancement of the Hispanic community.
Gutierrez was a consultant to WellMed. His sentencing has been reset four times and is now scheduled for Aug. 2.
