A man was arrested after he was accused of raping a homeless woman who asked for help finding a warm place to sleep for the night. Mohamed Awes Haji, 25, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of first-degree felony rape, according to the probable cause statement.
An officer with the Murray Police Department responded to a call at a gas station near 897 E Winchester Street in response to a reported sexual assault. During the investigation, police said they learned that Haji spoke with the victim from his car on Saturday morning. She said she was cold and tired and asked him for help finding a place to sleep for the night. Haji allegedly drove the victim to a hotel near 975 E 6600 S in Murray and paid for a room. The woman said she had expected him to leave after walking her to the room, but he stayed and sexually assaulted her, according to court documents. Police said the victim "grew quiet" when speaking of the assault and did not give further information on what occurred. She told officers that after the assault, Haji tried to pay her and left. The victim left the hotel and went to a gas station to call police, as she did not have a cellphone, according to the probable cause statement. She was then taken to a nearby hospital. Police gathered evidence from the hotel room and the victim's sexual assault forensic exam, as well as interviewed the suspect. The relationship between the suspect and the victim, if any, was not disclosed by police. The Utah-based Rape Recovery Center can be reached at 801-467-7273.
