PETALING JAYA: The Celcom Axiata Malaysian Open, scheduled to be held at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil from March 31 to April 5, has been postponed indefinitely due to worsening Covid-19 outbreak.

The decision by Badminton Association Malaysia , the tournament organisers, did not come as a surprise after Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin directed for all gatherings including sporting events nationwide to be cancelled or postponed until April 30.

The Badminton World Federation had also issued a statement on Friday night that they are suspending all the World Tour and their other sanctioned tournaments from Monday onwards until April 12. BAM, in a statement on Saturday said:"After close consultation with BWF, BAM confirms that the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2020 has been postponed to a date to be decided later.

"The confirmation is made in accordance with the decision made by the Government of Malaysia to suspend all sporting events due to restrictions in place as measures to combat the Covid-19 outbreak until the end of April 2020."In respect of ticket buyers to the event, refunds will commence on Monday and will be processed to all within eight working days," said the statement.
