A multi-million dollar construction project to replace bridges and rehabilitate spans along Monroe Avenue is underway, expected to cause significant traffic delays and last until fall 2028. The project will reduce traffic to two lanes in each direction and close entrance and exit ramps.

A long-awaited construction project begins at 7 a.m., weather permitting, to fix critical bridges nearing the end of their lives. Heavier traffic and longer waits around this busy stretch of Monroe Avenue are a price a business owner is willing to pay.

“Overall, these things have to be done,” said Sam Khalil, the owner of Basha Mediterranean. “The bridge, when you drive under it, you’ll be so afraid, and it will be fixed. I know it will be a hassle, but we have to do it.” A major construction project will replace the bridge carrying 590 over Route 31 and rehabilitate the spans over Allen's Creek Road."I've worked here for almost 23 years, and lately we've been after Whole Foods went in," said Guy Parker, a construction worker. "We're getting 20-30 minute traffic jams almost daily.""The bridge should be fixed," continued Parker. "Probably a dace or two ago. They've been crumbling for a long time." The $51.5 million project will reduce traffic to two lanes in each direction during construction and close the Monroe Avenue entrance ramp to 590 south and the exit ramp, exit 2B. State officials also say temporary roadway and shoulder closures will be required along Monroe Avenue. "It's going to affect my business big time, because you know that traffic will be jammed, but it's a price we have to pay," continued Khalil. Preliminary work ended in 2025, and the state DOT says construction has already begun on the northbound lanes. Work on the southbound side will take place during the 2027 construction season, with the whole project expected to last until fall 2028.Auburn, N.Y. — A correction officer is accused of bringing significant amounts of drugs to work at Cayuga Correctional Facility after a joint investigation byWilliamson, N.Y.
