Maimane launches petition against Gordhan's 'crazy' load shedding exemption appeal

has launched his party's petition calling on South Africans, businesses and civil society to force government to comply with a recent court ruling that critical institutions such as hospitals, police stations and school should be exempted from load shedding.

Addressing a small crowd outside the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto on Wednesday morning, Maimane said people should sign the petition to demand that Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan should drop his"crazy, illegal, immoral challenge" of the court ruling. On Monday, Gordhan announced that the department of public enterprises would be lodging an urgent appeal against Friday’s Pretoria High Court ruling. The UDM, IFP, ActionSA, te National Union of Mineworkers and other parties applied to the courts to have the clinics, hospitals, schools and police stations exempted from power cuts. It is an assault on the Constitution.

"We also want to be very clear, I am writing to the minister [Gordhan] to say that I am giving you 60 days to comply with the court judgment. If you still have a moral, constitutional backbone, switch off the ministers [electricity] so that the people can have power,” he said. The court ordered government to implement the judgment within 60 days. It, however, noted that it would be impossible to isolate embedded buildings, sparing them from load shedding. It said government must ensure that alternative energy supply was secured in such cases, to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
