Leading candidates, outside groups combined to spend nearly $1.6 million
Bilal Mahmood narrowly leads incumbent San Francisco Supervisor Dean Peston among the votes counted so far in the District 5 race.
Mahmood and Preston combined to spend more than $1 million in the race, with more than $528,000 in additional spending from outside groups. The Coalition to Grow San Francisco, GrowSF’s political-action committee organized to oust Preston, spent more than $300,000 alone against the incumbent. Some of the criticisms levied against Preston have come from business owners in the Tenderloin over a lack of cooperation with the San Francisco Police Department and Mayor London Breed’s office over public-safety concerns. Preston has emphasized the use of community ambassadors, while Mahmood has been an outspoken advocate for increased police staffing and spending.
