Matt Mahan continued to see his small lead over Cindy Chavez grow in the San Jose mayor race but with tens of thousands of ballots yet to count the candidates remained in suspense.

Matt Mahan maintained a small but growing lead over Cindy Chavez in the race to serve as San Jose’s first new mayor in eight years, but with tens of thousands of ballots yet to be counted, the contest remained too close to call and may not be settled for days.

The winner will replace termed-out Mayor Sam Liccardo, who has endorsed Mahan, along with business and real estate groups, while Mahan’s fellow council members gave their nod to Chavez, who enjoyed labor and business support. Michael Borja, a spokesman for the Santa Clara County elections office, said Thursday that 247,000 ballots countywide have yet to be processed. But Borja said there’s no way to know how many of those ballots are from San Jose voters.

“We’re probably looking at about another 130,000-140,000 votes still out there,” Percival said, or about twice what has been tallied, revising an earlier estimate based on new data. But he said Mahan remains in a more favorable position.
