The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake struck at 6:23 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located 130 miles south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands. The quake had a depth of 6.2 miles, further intensifying its potential impact.
In response to the seismic activity, authorities in the Cayman Islands issued a tsunami threat alert, urging residents living near coastlines to move inland as a safety precaution. Similarly, Honduran authorities, while reporting no immediate damages, advised their citizens to stay clear of beaches for the next few hours. The International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC) issued a broader warning, stating that hazardous tsunami waves were possible within the next three hours along the coasts of numerous Caribbean islands and countries, including Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, the Bahamas, Haiti, Turks and Caicos, San Andres Providence, Belize, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Saba.The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) confirmed that there was no immediate tsunami threat to the U.S. mainland but issued a tsunami advisory for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
