A man in the Bronx was brutally attacked by a machete-wielding assailant while walking his dog. The victim suffered severe injuries to his hand, with three fingers reattached by surgeons and one missing.
Tayquon Young, a 34-year-old maintenance worker for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, was walking with his caramel-colored pit bull Chanel in the Bronx on Friday when a man wielding a machete attack ed him. Young said that Chanel was trying to play with another dog when the attacker, who had threatened to behead the pit bull, lunged at them with a machete. Young instinctively tried to protect his dog by putting his hand out, resulting in the attacker severing three of his fingers.
Doctors spent 13 hours reattaching those fingers, but the fourth finger could not be found. The attacker fled the scene, leaving Young to be rushed to the hospital. Young, who is recovering from the attack, is unsure what prompted the unprovoked assault. He suspects the attacker may have been seeking trouble. Young's mother, Kimtreese Young, expressed her worry over her son's livelihood as he faces difficulty returning to his job. She recounted the harrowing experience, stating that witnesses recorded the attack on their phones instead of offering help. Young, deeply shaken by the incident, fears that the attack may be indicative of a larger problem of violence in the Bronx. He questions whether carrying a weapon might be necessary to protect himself in the future.
