A suspect, described as 'hellbent' on killing as many people as possible, drove a pickup truck around barricades and plowed into a crowd of New Year's revelers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans at a high rate of speed. At least 10 people died and dozens were injured early Wednesday, according to city and federal officials. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell called the horrific incident a 'terrorist attack,' and the FBI is investigating it as such.
The suspect, identified by the FBI as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Army veteran, allegedly fired shots into the crowd after mowing down numerous people over a three-block stretch. He then got out of the truck wielding an assault rifle and opened fire on police officers, law enforcement officials briefed on the incident told ABC News. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect. At least two police officers were shot and wounded. New Orleans police have reviewed surveillance video that appears to show several people planting potential explosive devices in advance of the vehicle ramming, leading the FBI to conclude the driver was not 'solely responsible' for the attack. Rep. Carter told ABC News that investigators are still trying to determine the position of the security bollards intended to prevent vehicles from going onto Bourbon Street at the time of the attack. 'It appears that the bollards may not have been in a fully operational mode, but there was a police vehicle that was there to deter any vehicle from getting onto Bourbon Street,' Carter said
