The students in MacArthur High School's skateboarding club helped save their teacher when he went into cardiac arrest during a skating session.
When 17-year-old Steven Amaro placed the defibrillator pads on his favorite teacher’s chest, one thought raced through his head. “I remembered my family saying children should never die before their parents,” the MacArthur High School senior said. “Knowing his mother was still alive and not wanting her to go through that is really what drove me to save him.” Nov. 7 started as a normal Thursday for Amaro and the dozen other students in the campus’s skateboarding club, Mac Skate .
“It was this fear of loss and a sense of huge responsibility that this life is in my hands, and we might be the difference between life and death.' She and Amaro got the AED pads, lifted Compton’s shirt and delivered the shock. It was another potentially life-saving coincidence that Amaro got CPR- and AED-certified in health class two weeks prior, so it was fresh on his mind. The student said he was scared but knew what to do because of his health teacher.
