) - For 57 years, Mac Sporting Goods has been a part of the community. However, starting Saturday, this longtime staple will be closing its doors. Community members made sure to stop by and say one last goodbye to the sporting goods shop off North Eastern Boulevard.
“It’s one of those things from my childhood that I really like,” said long-time customer and friend of the store, Craig Brazell.“I hate that they’re closing but it’s one of those things. I’m happy for them to be able to move on and go on to the next chapter of their life. I wish the rest of the community could understand what Billy and his family mean to the rest of this community,” said Brazell. He still calls the store McLendon’s, having grown up running around the aisles in the late 80’s to soon buying his first pair of Oakley sunglasses from them. “I was fortunate enough to spend 17 years in professional baseball. Play in the major leagues, play in Japan and it was funny, even in the offseason I would still come back here,” said Brazell. He lives in Auburn but grew up in Montgomery. It was his decision to make the drive over today to see goodbye, because of what this store meant to him growing up. “If you played sports in this town, you knew McLendon’s Sporting Goods because we didn’t have the big box stores,” said Brazell.
