While smoking rates have dropped, the Lung Association warns that tobacco lobbyists are increasing their influence and flavored tobacco products remain easily accessible. They urge Congress to increase funding for the FDA to target illegal tobacco products and support anti-smoking campaigns and cessation resources.

FILE - In this April 23, 2014, file photo, a man smokes an electronic cigarette in Chicago. Thirty-six million adults in the U.S. still smoke cigarettes, and nearly 500,000 people lose their lives each year from tobacco use, the Lung Association said.

“They've been stepping up their efforts in the past few years, certainly around flavored tobacco products,” Carr said. “They put a full-court press on against the menthol and flavored cigar rules with the former Biden administration. They've also been opposing pretty heavily any states that try to end the sale of flavored tobacco products.

The Lung Association is asking Congress to increase funding for the FDA to go after illegal products in a more aggressive way.
