The American Lung Association calls on Ohio to raise the cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack to reduce tobacco use and its associated health and financial burdens. The 2025 'State of Tobacco Control' report highlights the tobacco industry's aggressive tactics to target young users and the need for effective tobacco control policies.

The American Lung Association is urging Ohio lawmakers to implement a $1.50 per pack increase in the cigarette tax as a means to mitigate the substantial human and financial burdens associated with tobacco consumption. This recommendation stems from the 2025 'State of Tobacco Control ' report, which critically analyzes state and federal policies designed to eradicate tobacco use. The report proposes effective tobacco control legislation and policies aimed at safeguarding lives.

The report not only grades Ohio's tobacco control policies, but also delves into the escalating tactics employed by the tobacco industry to ensnare a new generation into tobacco addiction and obstruct proven public policies aimed at preventing and reducing tobacco use. Kezia Ofosu Atta, Advocacy Director at the American Lung Association, stated, 'In addition to grading Ohio’s tobacco control policies, this year’s ‘State of Tobacco Control’ report examines the tobacco industry’s increasingly aggressive actions to addict a new generation to tobacco and hinder proven public policies to prevent and reduce tobacco use.' She further elaborated, 'Here in Ohio, we are witnessing tobacco industry lobbyists endeavoring to impede or weaken established tobacco control policies. Moreover, the tobacco industry is introducing novel products that hold particular appeal for youth, such as e-cigarettes that resemble smartphones, kid-friendly flavors, and flavored nicotine pouches aggressively marketed by social media influencers.'The report underscores that augmenting taxes on all tobacco products, encompassing e-cigarettes, is among the most efficacious strategies to curtail tobacco use, particularly amongst young individuals. Research indicates that a 10% rise in cigarette prices can result in a 4% reduction in consumption among adults and a 7% decrease among youth. 'In 2025, policymakers in Ohio must prioritize increasing the cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack and establishing tax parity across all tobacco products,' Atta emphasized
