After Dallas Animal Services posted on Facebook about the massive stray tortoise they picked up Tuesday, swarms of inquiries came in from people wondering if...

Lorenzo had been missing for five weeks before DAS picked up him up, according to Fernandez. In the summer, Fernandez, who owns a landscaping company, lets Lorenzo and his four other sulcata tortoises roam and graze on his 1-acre property abutting a creek. Sometimes, because sulcatas like to dig, they hide — but Fernandez always knows where to find them, even when they find their way to the wooded area by the creek.

This time, though, he couldn’t find Lorenzo. He, his family and his neighbors searched the property and surrounding areas for days to no avail. Sulcata tortoises, the third-largest tortoise species in the world, escape quite often, undeterred by fences, enclosures or even, apparently, bodies of water. They also can get quite far, moving faster than many people would assume.Lorenzo, the 180-pound tortoise, was lost for five weeks before owner Gabriel Fernandez was reunited with him with the help of Dallas Animal Services.

When animal services officers picked up Lorenzo, they were responding to a strange call: Someone had found a large stray tortoise in their backyard. As it turns out, that backyard was just across the creek from Fernandez’s property: Lorenzo had spent five weeks burrowing and grazing unnoticed within a stone’s throw from his usual stomping grounds.

“We couldn’t find him, and I was always wondering, if someone was to see him, if someone would just try to keep him or something,” Fernandez said. “So I never really knew if someone was going to turn him in.”For two days after wandering into the wrong backyard, Lorenzo ate like a king. Animal services put him in a warm, outdoor area usually used for horses and livestock, and staff quickly took a liking to the friendly tortoise, feeding him all manner of fresh vegetables.
