Dallas Animal Services employees had to work hard to wrangle Wendell, and they're now looking for the tortoise's owner.

As it turns out, though, tortoises of this kind make a break for it quite often. Wendell is a sulcata tortoise, the third-largest species in the world, and they are incredibly strong and love to dig.Michelle Crow of North Texas Rescue Reptile previously worked with the McKinney Reptile and Exotics Rescue, and she said that while there, the rescue once had five sulcata tortoises come into their care in a two-month span.

Animal services has already received calls from people claiming Wendell is their own missing tortoise. However, since tortoises aren’t microchipped like dogs or cats frequently are, animal services has to get creative to identify his owner.Keeping most information about Wendell private helps prevent prospective tortoise snatchers from using identifying information they found online to claim and abscond with him.

Crow said that she has seen tortoise owners begin to put trackers on their tortoises because, not only do they escape often, but when they do, they go so far.“Like everybody is always looking for their tortoise,” Crow said. “And of course it’s nice outside, so I don’t even know how far that one could have traveled.”
