A Los Angeles -based media personality has spoken out about his alarming experience with 911 response time s after his home was burglarized. Evan Lovett, creator of the 'LA in a Minute' podcast, reported the break-in on Friday evening while he and his family were out. The thieves made off with precious family heirlooms and other valuables before they returned home. Lovett was shocked by the length of time it took to connect with a live operator.
After calling 911, he was placed on hold for nearly an hour, listening to the recorded message assuring him his call was important but advising him not to hang up. He recalled the wait increasing from six minutes to fifteen, then twenty, thirty, and finally reaching 59 minutes before he spoke to someone. \Lovett acknowledged the challenges faced by 911 operators due to staffing shortages but stressed the urgency of emergency calls. He said, 'Once I got to the six-minute mark, like, this is pretty interesting. Six minutes turned into 15, into 20, 30, 44, finally, the 59 minute mark the call was answered.' Despite the lengthy wait, Lovett praised the dispatcher and police officers who arrived promptly after he finally connected. He shared that the officers informed him that these long dispatch times are unfortunately not uncommon, with some callers experiencing waits of two to two and a half hours. \Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman addressed the issue, attributing the long wait times to low recruitment for 911 operators and the routing of both emergency and non-emergency calls through the same operators. Raman emphasized the urgency of finding solutions and highlighted the city's efforts to hire more operators. Mayor Karen Bass' office also issued a statement acknowledging the unacceptable situation and pledging to investigate. They emphasized the city's commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and highlighted their efforts to increase 911 dispatcher staffing
