Lorain County Community Development has donated essential supplies to the Lorain County Dog Kennel, continuing the department’s annual tradition of employee-led giving to support local services and county operations.

ELYRIA, Ohio -- Lorain County Community Development has donated essential supplies to the Lorain County Dog Kennel, continuing the department’s annual tradition of employee-led giving to support local services and county operations.

The donation was made possible through the department’s weekly “Jeans Day” jar, a voluntary initiative in which employees contribute funds during Friday morning gatherings. The 2025 recipient was LCDK, a self-funded county facility that temporarily houses stray dogs and works to place them into permanent homes. Funds collected throughout the year were used to purchase dog food and treats, cleaning and sanitation products, and leashes. Those items support the kennel’s day-to-day operations and animal care. “What makes this donation especially meaningful is knowing it came directly from our employees and went straight to meeting real, immediate needs,” said Rob Duncan, director of Lorain County Community Development. “We’re grateful to the Dog Warden and kennel staff for the work they do and for showing us firsthand how our collective giving makes a difference.” The Lorain County Dog Kennel operates without local general fund dollars, while relying on fees, donations, and community support to conduct its mission. Community Development staff recently visited the facility, located at 301 Hadaway Court in Elyria, where they met with Dog Warden Andy Laubenthal and members of his team to learn more about kennel operations and the impact of the donated supplies. The kennel is open to the public Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is closed Sundays, Mondays, and legal holidays.Past recipients of the department’s annual employee giving campaign have included Blessing House, Neighborhood Alliance, and Good Knights. County officials also remind residents that Ohio law requires all dogs over three months of age to be licensed.
