A Long Island model train club is celebrating its largest-ever open house, showcasing a 6,500-square-foot display meticulously crafted over 16 months. The Train Masters of Babylon (TMB), a 70-member strong group, transformed a vast basement at the Upper Room Church in Dix Hills into a miniature world of bustling railroads. The elaborate setup features three main lines with up to three trains running simultaneously, two branch lines, and a dedicated subway system beneath the display.
Towering skyscrapers of New York City, oil refineries along the New Jersey Turnpike, the iconic Horseshoe Curve of Pennsylvania, and numerous other landmarks are recreated with astonishing detail. The project, costing around $100,000, will be open to the public for two days, allowing an estimated 700 visitors to marvel at the craftsmanship and intricate workings. The club's dedication to this passion project is evident in the countless hours spent on construction and design. They faced numerous challenges, including relocating to a facility nearly twice the size of their previous space and filling nine dumpsters of debris during the move. The TMB's commitment to preserving model train history is also showcased through a unique artifact: a blood-splattered set piece from the iconic HBO series 'The Sopranos.' Acquired through a trade with a train club in New Jersey, the set piece, used in a pivotal scene, adds a touch of cinematic intrigue to the display. As a tribute to the show's connection to Long Island, the TMB runs a replica Blue Comet miniature railroad, similar to the one featured in the episode where a character meets his demise.
