A team led by Harvard Medical School has narrowed the list of Long Covid symptoms from more than 200 to 12. They now include: ⚪️ Loss of taste or smell ⚪️ Postexertional malaise ⚪️ Chronic cough ⚪️ Brain fog
- or postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection to use its official name. The only official definition has been ‘ongoing, relapsing or new symptoms or conditions present 30 or more days after infection’.
To better understand the often debilitating disease, a team from several universities and hospitals across theassessed data from 9,764 participants - 8,646 of whom had previously been infected with Covid-19. Accounting for differences in age, sex, race and ethnicity, the team analysed symptom frequency and assigned each a score from 0 to 8, which helped narrow down the myriad effects to a list of 12.
A loss of taste or smell was the strongest indicator of Long Covid, followed by postexertional malaise , a chronic cough, brain fog and thirst. Palpitations, chest pain, fatigue and a loss of sexual desire or capacity followed. Dizziness, gastrointesintal issues and abnormal movements complete the list., the authors said: ‘This study found that long-term symptoms associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection spanned multiple organ systems. The diversity of symptoms may be related to persistent viral reservoirs, autoimmunity, or direct differential organ injury.
