Local democracy in Texas is endangered | Opinion
Nondiscrimination ordinances or protections from predatory lending are the type or ordinances that will come under fire if HB 2127 is approved by the Texas Legislature, writes Brian Rowland. The great strength of Texas lies in our communities. No two communities are the same. Neither are the problems they face or the solutions they need.
This is a huge problem if you like having your concerns addressed quickly. The council meets every other week at City Hall and our county commissioners meet every week to address a wide array of issues to make our neighborhoods a better place to live. On the other hand, that kind of access and responsiveness doesn’t exist at the Texas Legislature. Legislators only meet for five months every two years, giving you a limited window to drive all the way down to Austin and share your concerns.
Prairie View has very unique needs, and as a former elected official in our city, I know I wouldn’t be equipped to understand the issues facing Lubbock, nor is a lawmaker from Lubbock well-suited to manage our city. I see our neighbors take time out of the day to advocate for local laws and programs that reflect the quality of life we want for our communities.
You’ll hear arguments about the need for businesses to have one operating standard from city to city. For most people — especially the voters who have demanded these changes — it’s hard to understand how nondiscrimination ordinances or protections from predatory lending would create compliance issues for anyone other than the bad actors in their communities.
