, Longhorns are among the happiest college students in the United States. The report used an AI emotion recognition tool, Amazon Rekognition API, to find out which universities boasted the"highest proportions of happy faces" on Instagram. However, two Texas universities beat out the University of Texas at Austin, as Texas Christian University in Fort Worth ranked the happiest in the nation, while Baylor University in Waco came in fourth. Altogether, four Texas schools — including Southern Methodist University at No. 18 — made the top 20 and six — Texas A&M University at No. 60 and Rice University at No. 88 — were among the 88 schools ranked in the report. None of those was in San Antonio.
"Our analysis reveals that the overall winner is Texas Christian University," the report states."When we applied a facial expression analysis to Instagram photos tagged at the Fort Worth institution, we found that three out of four faces registered as happy — more than any other university in the country."
The AI tool provides a confidence level of 0 percent to 100 percent on how likely a face is to be expressing happiness, and for a face to register as happy, it had to be at 75 percent or above. Only photos with five or fewer faces were used, and only schools where there were more than 100 photos were ranked. Resume.io manually collected data in December 2022 and January 2023.
