The slain teacher and her sister were honored at the People's Choice Awards on Tuesday night., the teacher who died trying to save her fourth-grade students after a gunman entered her classroom in Uvalde, was honored by Lizzo at the People’s Choice Awards on Tuesday night.

Maggie Mireles-Thomas, Eva Mireles’ sister, was on stage with Lizzo and 17 other activists. Lizzo received the People’s Champion Award and invited Mireles-Thomas and others to share the award.“Her sister Eva Mireles was a teacher and a hero who lost her life protecting her students at a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas,” Lizzo said. “Maggie is continuing her fight against senseless and despicable gun violence that has become far too common.”Lizzo then hugged Mireles-Thomas.

Ahead of the ceremony, Mireles-Thomas said on Facebook: “I’m gonna make sure everyone knows who my sister is!!! Honored to be here at The People’s Choice Awards to honor and recognize Eva and her sacrifice.”killed at Robb Elementary School on May 24. The 44-year-old teacher was remembered for her love of her husband and adult daughter, as well as her passions — CrossFit, working out, hiking, her dog Kane and singing Rihanna’s “Diamonds” at the top of her lungs.

Mireles was an educator for 17 years who was born in Dallas and graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1999. She had co-taught a class with Irma Garcia, who was also killed at Robb Elementary School, for the past six school years. Mireles spent some of her final moments on her cellphone with her husband Ruben Ruiz, a police officer for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District. He rushed to the scene, only to be prevented from entering the classroom by other police officers.
